Lifesaving competitions offer a fantastic chance to put your skills to the test and meet lifesavers from other universities across the country. Lifesaving sport adapts practical lifesaving skills into a suitable form for competitions and you’ll have the chance to train in both traditional and sport lifesaving at OULSC. We try to attend a competition every term in addition to the national student championships in the spring. Competitions are a lot of fun and you can come along as a competitor or a helper.
The league is run by the British Universities Lifesaving Clubs Association (BULSCA), with competitions taking place on Saturdays between October and May. However, attending competitions is not compulsory!
What does a BULSCA league comp involve?
League comps are made up of two parts: Simulated Emergency Response Competitions (SERCs) and Speeds events. You compete in mixed gender teams of four in all events. Each competition features a dry (land based) and wet (pool based) SERC where teams have two minutes to respond to a simulated emergency, such as an accident in a chemistry lab or a sinking ship. In the speeds section, teams compete in events such as the 12.5 metre line throw relay and the swim and tow relay.
